For people of an average body weight, this system is great. Choose clothing made from wicking fabric, which will pull the moisture away from your skin quickly and help your body cool. Cotton gets wet and dries slowly. Another consequence of allowing too much heat and moisture to remain trapped against your skin is chafing. Whenever your skin rubs repeatedly against something else while exercising skin, rough fabric, sweaty socks, an iPod armband , chafing is possible — and it can be painful!
Overweight runners tend to suffer more from chafing, because we have more skin. There are a few solutions to this problem, one of which is a skin lubricant designed for athletes my recommendation is BodyGlide or a more heavy-duty solution such as Moleskin. Look for words like moisture management, wicking, or DriFit on the label.
Tights are almost always the most comfortable choice, at least for women. But heed my guidance on the fabric. A motion-control bra that keeps your breasts immobilized will make your run so much more comfortable and pleasant! Not to mention, it will cut down on those strange looks you get from passersby. Choose one with little to no stretch and wide, cushioned straps.
Personally, I recommend the Enell Sport. A little extra support for your, ahem, wobbly bits, can mean the difference between a good run and an uncomfortable run. There are always differences across retailers, and this will save you a lot of hassle up front. Hope you find something you like! Join Our Facebook Community Login. Stepping off my soap box. Let me tell you what happened today. I was about to make some lunch for my mom when there was a knock at the door. We live on a dead-end lane, and we rarely have visitors, so I went to the door. It was the UPS guy leaving some snow boots I ordered.
He was pulling out by the time I got to the door, and I opened the door to retrieve my boots. My two adorable dogs darted out the door and took off like bats outta hell!!
Without thinking, I took off at what is a sprint to me, but a brisk walk to someone else. I ran down our gravel lane in 30 degree weather after the pups. I felt like I was floating and had no control over my legs, but I knew they were pumping hard. My mom, who brilliantly thought to grab the deli turkey from the fridge, followed.
We got Sugar back, but not Joey. I took the turkey and proceeded to chase Joey, who I lost sight of. My feet were stinging and my back was killing me. Let me also say that I have a pinched nerve in my back. But still, I ran. I finally retrieved Joey and hobbled back home.
I thought I was dying. Tomorrow may be a different story. I completely relate to Joy. Sorry for the long story.
But thank you, Joy, for your sage advice!! I recently retired from a 30 year stressful job as a schoolbus driver, so now I have more time to get out there, and DO something for me.
Thank you so much for writing this awesome article. I ran when I was younger but had a neck injury and then children and gained a ton of weight, which makes me want to hide in the house or only go out after dark, ha! I want to at least try shuffle running or something as I really miss it.

You are awesome and a complete badass for ignoring all the naysayers, yourself included!
